Paul,

Look for the book ROBOTIC OBSERVATORIES by Genet & Hayes, they have a good
idea for telescope drives that are super accurate and cheap too... No large
expensive gears to buy, stepper motor driven and easy to implement. The ideas
are also reflected in the new book by Genet & Trueblood TELESCOPE CONTROL
available at Willman-Bell. You might save enough money to pay for the books
and avoid some headaches too. Two good books to have once you start thinking
about drive systems.
