Boy....you folks were great!

Now, one last request, as I consider altering the scope (no pun intented) of
the proposed article.

The why-would-anyone-want-to-build-a-telescope-when-there-are-so-many-good-
telescopes-on-the-market often give me the impression that they think good
telescopes are baked by elves in a hollow tree. Thus, I would like to show
that most of the innovations we see in the glossy magazines today did not come
from the pizza filled lunchrooms of the mega-manufacturers but rather from
film canisters that came back form exotic places like Stellafane, Riverside,
and Astrofest.

So, what innovations have you spotted over the last few years that were used
by a telescope maker in your astronomy club years earlier? Please consider
electronics and mechanical innovations as well.
