Howard,
Andy Saulietis and I designed and installed just such a clutch
to three 17.5" Dob Newts in 1982-3. These worked quite well and the one
on my 17.5 was very necessary to hold things in place back when I had
the scope on an equatorial platform for CCD imaging. The curved clamp
had a roughened Masonite brake pad on the undersurface which clamped
against the top of the aluminum trunnion surface.
