Most of the machinists I run into on a daily basis don't care wether its
metric or english, they convert as needed depending on the tools available.
The thing they really don't like is a mixture.

I tend to agree,  telescope mirrors in inches and eyepieces in mm is a bummer.

Also, just because its metric doesn't make it a better unit; I saw one
abomination a while back- a pressure guage on a european car with the units
Kg/m^2.
