For the record: I will confirm the universiality of the 1/4" 20 screw mount.
The other standard in use pertains mainly to larger, commercial, film and
video tripods worldwide and uses a 3/8" 16 screw. How a non-metric system
took over is a curiosity since today most commercial tripod heads are made in
Germany, Italy or England.
Incidently, as a cameraman with such gear, when I finish my 8" mirror and
tube, the first light it well see will come atop a film-camera fluid head.
Perhaps that will give me freedom to take my time building a dedicated mount.
