Re: [ATM] how many errors can you spot in this passage on Foucault?
Anybody want to do a speed of light measurement up at RTMC this
year?
It would bee an interesting experiment to do, accurately
measuring the distance to somewhereas well as the speed of the
shutter mechanism so as to determine the time of flight of the
light. Remember that light goes at approximately a foot per
nanosecond.
Don't use any moder4n methods ofr determining the rotation speed
of teh shutter and things get interesting. I'd probably setup a
tuning fork type mesurement of the e shutter as you can easily
measure the frequency of such a thing. I'd suspect, without
going and doing research into this is that this is the way that
Foucault determined the frequency of occultation of the light
beam as he was very familiar with pendulums.
