Check out www.amateurlogic.com , starting with episode 15. Nice segment on SMD (surface mount devices). I also found some videos on youtube, just search for soldering surface mount devices.

This is what I do, down to 0.8mm pitch.
Best to use small quantities of flux, to improve sucking the surplus tin 
away with the desoldering litze.
