Let's see if I can word this properly (Ken is watching).

"Mike's sharpie assisted test for grinding action" can certainly be 
used.  Draw sharpie lines on the mirror and observe them while 
grinding if they disappear uniformly.  Adjust machine or technique 
appropriately.

The sharpie test (no abrasive, orinated by Ken) will probably work OK, 
but it is more accurate with a full-size tool, I am guessing.
