Re: [ATM] Mirror Edge Support Calculator
Robert:
I would also like to echo Mike Lindner's thanks; something like this has
been needed for a long time, just waiting for the right person to make the
rather large investment of time needed to do the subject justice. Reviewing
your results, what jumps out for me are the conclusions that either cable
sling or whiffletree are nearly equivalent, provided either support is
executed to support the load through the plane containing the mirror C of G.
Small errors locating the C of G combined with unexpected friction sources
have in the past, I suspect created situations where some makers end at
blaming the design when more truly lacking was some aspect of execution that
violated one or more necessary conditions for success. Exactly what many of
us have "known" all along through experience and through studying the
available literature, but now we have your tool to back our understanding
with accurate numbers.
About a year or so ago, I acquired a license for the ALGOR FEA program, and
have taken some baby steps with it. It should prove interesting and fun to
compare any results I can generate with the results your calculator comes up
with. Provided I don't make too many stupid mistakes in setting up
constraint geometries, modeling connections where friction occurs, or
meshing the substrate geometry improperly, I would expect my own FEA
results should converge within 10% or thereabouts, if agreement between your
models and Maro Dalio's is typical for accurate work. Who knows, maybe we
will start an FEA interest area within the ATM list?
Anyway, thanks again for making your tools accessible to the community at
large, it made for an interesting evening read last night, and I'm sure will
do so again in the future.

Thanks for making this available! I was quickly able to verify that the
scope I'm building should perform well with the 90 degree edge supports
I've planned.
Clear skies.
