  A tile tool would take considerable longer. Another option might be to use
a subdiameter tile tool (~50%) which would concentrate the effort on
deepening the center first as a pipe flange does. The one big advantage to
the pipe flange, though, is it's cheap and ready to use out of the box. It
lasts a long time, too.

Just a thought though, doesn't a flange only have a small bottom ring
grinding on the mirror? To me it would seem a "solid" tool, of the same
diameter would be much faster, but common sense can sometimes fail us, any
one care to comment?
