A lap does not have to be pitch. It can be cast iron, aluminum, glass,
plastic or a bunch of other things. I think that rough grinding can properly
be called lapping. Am I wrong?

I haven't tried the micro-grit powders with a pitch lap. Maybe it would work
as a sort of pre-polish. But it seems to me that since it would be a waste
of a good pitch lap. Maybe it would be useful for obtaining a highly
aspheric surface.

What are you making John, when you use the micro-grits on a pitch lap?
