As far as I have been able to discover the traditional Scandinavian
methods used heat as well, the hollow in the side
of the hill where they stacked the roots of pine trees was one part of a
giant kiln with a fire chamber as well. There's a diagram at

I know this process, but it does not appear to be how it was done in
Scandinavian material that was exported. That was just left for a long
time while it dripped out. Obviously, adding heat would speed things
along, but no idea if this affects the final product, or what procedure
Gugolz uses.
