I have, over the years, found that the tried and true
method of fine grinding with aluminium oxide lapping
powders, which are specially shaped for their
application, is the best way to go.  If you can do a
nice 9u fine grind, or maybe 5u if your area is clean,
the mirror will polish out just fine, with cerium
oxide.

Both commercially and astronomically, I have not
figured out why people use Zirconium oxide, but some
people do seem to get positive results.
