The discussion on this thread has brought up two suggestions that are
both valid, and are also interrelated in a way some may not realize.
Vibrations may be reduced by stiffening a structure (the design
suggestions), and by increasing dampening (the putty sugggestion).  What
may not be apparent is that increasing stiffness can also often have the
effect of increasing dampening.  Why?  Because increasing stiffness
increases the vibration frequency of the structure, and because many
materials' dampening characteristics increase with frequency.
