Sometimes you just need to make a set of drawings of what is
going on.
Do a set of 3 drawings o f each of the combinations with a
straight line through the middle of the surfaces which is the
imaginary flat line that the surfaces should be and you will see
what is going on.  Draw vertical lines and mark them for the
fringe points where the 1/2 wave spots are.
I'll also note that I've got an article on my website on making
optical flats in the John Pierce section and also have a little
program that does the calculation for the fring counting.
