Well, the thought did come to my mind as well. I can say that
1200 SiC from MicroAbrasives, a common source for us ATM's
seems to polish glass when used in conjunction with bee's wax,
one possible substitute for conifer pitch. I discovered this
once when I thought to try and get a better match between a tool
and mirror by first using 1200 SiC.
