Hi Dominic,
I'm guessing from your observation you have never had the pleasure of wet
sanding black lacquer paint to produce the "mirror black piano finish" :)
To keep it atm related, here's an example:

The three altitude sectors of the Tri-Dob mount are fabricated from 1/2 Birch
plywood, the grain is filled with automotive body filler, then 14 coats of black
lacquer, wet sanding with 400 - 1500 grit carbide based sand paper between
coats. The final coat is then buffed out with automotive rubbing compound, and
finally waxed with automotive car wax.
The polishing of plastic came to mind because I've been frequently asked if the
altitude sectors are fabricated from some type of plastic. :)
