[ATM] Remove old mirror coating.

Hi. I recently bought old Coulter 6" mirror. The aluminum coating has taken a 
beating over the years and I was going to have it recoated. Before sending 
the mirror in I tested it and found the figure very unsatisfactory. I want to 
refigure the mirror before I have it recoated. My question(s) is how can I 
remove the old coating (I believe it is aluminized with an overcoating) or will 
polishing on a pitch lap remove the old coating. Any advice?
