Re: [ATM] Diagonal Size

Hi Scott,

I would say considerably better, if the Newt has less than 18% obstruction, and if it is made with the same care as the refractor. I once compared my old 8" f/8 Newt with the best 8" refractor made by TMB, in great seeing. Let me tell you, that is a fabulous refractor. Both scopes resolved equally on the moon and Mars and double stars. The refractor had a slightly more pleasing view, I think because he had better eyepieces and I had the spider (3-vane curved). However, the Newt was able to go higher magnification. The refractor owner wouldn't go over ~300x. I think maybe he had a chromatic problem...

So I think a well-made 8" scope is an 8" scope, whether Newt or refractor.
