Buffalo has a High Power PCMCIA card that is really excellent. It supports
802.11 g/b *PLUS* it has a connection for an external antenna. I would put
an external directional antenna at the house and get one for the observatory
if the house can't make it.
There are some great directional antennas for 801; Yagi, Backfire, and Panel
types that yield 14-19db gain and lobes are good. Plus they are relatively
inexpensive $20-90.
I would try this before changing that card in the laptop.

There is another option but I don't think you'll need it and that's a
parabolic dish, I've connected 2 sites 2.5 miles apart with this type of
antenna. However, this is cost prohibited for the home user; $600-1500+
each.

PS. Make sure you have security turned on. You're signal will go a loooooong
way.
