One thing to consider is that some software can correct non
linearities in guiding, like PRiSM for example.

When you say you don't want to trust FE output, then what can
you trust?. If you can get access to something like Solidworks
with Cosmos suite then it's output is quite trustable,
regardless of complexity of the structure. Anyway, a quick check
in two axes with a DTI should put your mind at rest.
