S&T had an  article on a dentist in the N.E. ( Conn.?)  who made a 30" 
or 32" newt. who  sand blasted  the blank in a honeycomb fashion to 
reduce its weight and  etched it with "nasty stuff" ( it was not 
hydrofluric acid but probably a kin) to relieve any stress induced from 
the weight reduction. I believe this was in the last 3 years.  I did not 
find it with a short web seach, a longer search will probably find it.  
Of course the usual caveats apply.
