A 40x3 inch thick mirror can be supported on 27 points without problem.  
A 40x4 inch thick mirror can be supported on 18 or 27.  I understand you 
not wanting to go to 2.625 or 2.125, but shaving an inch off could help 
somewhat.  Your mirror, your choice though, and given your past 
experiences with thin mirrors I understand you preferring thicker over 
thinner.
