BTW - a 40" x 4" blank will weigh about 400 pounds.

Good luck on your project. 3/8" plate should be fairly easy to find at
commercial glass shops that do glass store fronts.  I had to order the 3/4"
for my 10" mirror but they had the 3/8" in stock that I used for the tool.
