PLOP works on just the support forces rather than any shear forces so it
doesn't matter whether the shear is non-zero at any particular angle.  At 45
degrees, the forces on the support is 70% of the full force.  We don't use
our scope at only 90 degrees so you need to figure out what the results of
the angle of the scope really are.  Turning off the refocus does tend to
tell you what the difference is between vertical and horizontal is.
