I watch the person and when he starts to move his hands towards the scope, I
mention to him that he shouldn't touch the scope unless he needs to focus
it.  I've not bothered myself to worry about those who do get upset as they
are basically not that kind of person that I'd prefer to be around.  They
generally don't have friends that don't understand them anyway so I'm not
really worried about bad press for my scope or me.
