Size of bearing pads is one of many adjustments recommended in "The  
Dobsonian Telescope" by David Kriege and Richard Berry. Refer to sections  10.3.4.1 
and 10.3.4.2.

i've got 24" diameter bearings on my lightweight 18" dob.  i don't think just
making the bearings bigger solves anything unless it  serves to increase
friction or move the balance point higher.

btw,  friction, per se, isn't a bad thing. stiction is what you want to avoid
for  smooth movement.
