[ATM] 770 primer with Loctite Prism 401
I have been selling aircraft Vortex Generators made from GE Lexan
for 18 years. They are used as laminar flow enhancements on
everything from Bonneville streamliners to Icelandic speed
skaters. On the strength of a what I'd been told by Locktight
applications engineer, I advised end users to use the 770 primer
before attaching the generators to the wings of aircraft.
During a more recent conversation with a senior applications
specialist at Locktight, we discovered that the former engineer
was incorrect in having told me to use the 770 primer. In some
applications, it's use is appropriate but with Lexan, the tensile
strength of the bond is actually compromised.
I urge everyone to check the Lock Tite spec sheet for
compatability. It helps if you know what material your part is
made of. Also, the gel equivalent (Prism 454) should be
considered for parts whose mating surfaces are irregular. It
contains a filler material that bridges the gap on poorly fitted
parts.
McMasters - Carr is a good source. It's not sold in retail
stores.
