Re: [ATM] truss poles; was: How Big is Too Big?
There are a large number of ways to put threads into wood. For good
hardwoods (not red oak!) like maple, you can do any of the UNC threads or
Witworth (old english threading system before the metrics) threads into the
wood with no problem. Then there are several systems of inserts from the
T-nuts to screw in inserts that will put nice threads into the wood. After
that, there is inletting real machine nuts into the wood, gluing them in
place. Finally, there is making a backing plate to the wood and screwing
into that.
I do have some of the large tap and die sets (3/4", 1" 1 1/2") that do about
6tpi in wood. They do want to be used on good hardwoods also and are a bit
rough compared to metalwoorking but they do work.
