consider also a "conventional" 8 member truss made of CF kite spars with
model airplane nylon tierod ends. cheap and effective.

A Truss composed of parallel elements (such as Ron's Alice)
has zero mechanical advantage by virtue of geometry, in which
case you would be better off with a single tube with larger
diameter. Also, there is no need to restrict yourself to round
tubes either, or for that matter, tubes that have the same
vertical / horizontal sections.
