Don't worry so much!! Just reform the lap surface and go on.
Heat in warm/hot water and push the pitch around as desired and form the
channels again and press. CeO or rouge will just firm up the lap surface a
bit and make it better working. You don't have to get the pitch that hot in
order to work it. I work with my pitch (Gogolz 73) at a temp where it
doesn't hurt to touch it and it works like soft butter. Getting it so hot
that it starts smelling is too hot for me. I haven't measured it for actual
temp (I probably should some day just to give you a good idea of how cool
pitch can be and still be worked) but I wouldn't suspect that it is much
more than about 120F or so.
Just heat it up and push the stuff around and have fun with it!
