Re mirrors in space..

Over the long term micrometeors will damage the
mirror surfaces permanently (not just coating damage).

IIRC some optical systems have been cleaned in space
by hosing them with frozen CO2..this might work for
sufficient cleanings to last for the life of the 
satellite.
