Actually, it's better than that -- it's not at all difficult to adapt
the tool rest from a wood lathe to mount on the cross slide or direct to
the bed of a metal turning lathe, and at least some wood lathe
accessories (built on #2 Morse Taper) will fit many common metal lathes
directly -- centers, face plates, and chucks especially.

This kind of setup can get you the best of both worlds, as you can use
the metal lathe to cut a piece to a precise diameter, then freehand
decorative or "artistic" shapes into it where you don't leave it at the
precision cut size.
