Don't worry about transmitting torque as a 1/2" shaft is more than good
enough to transmit anything that you can possibly generate.  If you're
worried about the torque you can transmit then you will want to key the
stuff to the shafts with woodruff keys or with splined shafts.  Either is
going to be a relative pain.  If you want a cheap key, use a drill to make a
round hole for the keying - use a steel ring to do this drilling as the
zamac of a pulley will tend to make the drill wander towards the zamac.
1/2" bolts can easily be torqued to about 100ft./lb. when tightening and
what happens there is the bolt will get streched, not twisted, when
overtorqued.  If you are doing that much torque, you must be doing very
large mirrors.  A larger shaft will make you a bit more confident but it's
really not needed.
