One of the things that you can get from some of the model train controllers
is a feedback mechanism to sense motor speed and thus get a better control
at the lower voltage levels. I built a controller back in the early '60s
that would speed the train up when it climbed a hill if the feedback wasn't
set right. A 100:1 ratio of control isn't anything to sniff at, especially
when it stays constant.
