I've never seen a lap crumble from excess pressure until that pressure was
huge. It could be that there was just something basically wrong with that
particular lap pitch. I had one guy that came in with a lap that was made
in the '50s and it apparently had some wax on it or the pitch had oxidized
out and it was quite crumbly. That's the only time that I've seen the
problem.
BTW, that same guy is the one that is having troubles with a ring (mentioned
about a month ago and he still hasn't gotten it out) on a '50s era pyrex
glass. The ring still isn't polishing out and he has opened the radius by
about 2.5" so far trying to work the edge over the center areas. Short of
sitting down with a turntable and doing a spell of subdiameter (1/2" lap!) I
really don't know what else to do. The guy just poured a new lap with
different pitch and he's going to try it to see what happens.
