FWIW, the oldtimers used the word "engine" for a lot of tools and this is
one that has kept on going.  There used to be polishing engines made that
would take a tool and press down on the metal, turn a bit and then lift and
step over a bit and do it again.  After it got down a row, it would return
the tool to the start point and step over a bit and commence again with the
process.  In quick order you would have the swirl marks all over the surface
of the metal and the size of the swirl and its depth depended upon the tool
and the grit used.  Some of the laser etched stuff emulates the engine
turning appearance.
