FWIW, I have a set of pictures of the sun setting on a dirty day over in
Vietnam and took a look at them and didn't notice that there was any
difference in the size of the sun.  The pictures were taken over about an
hour and the last one is of the sun's bottom sitting right on top of the
deck of the USS Constellation with the mail plane inside the sun's edge.
The eye/brain effect does tend to operate but not very strongly in these
images with the last one actually seeming to be a smaller sun that earlier
shots.
