Here's simple scheme I've used to handle discs up to 110 lbs, using a simple
furniture clamp. The clamp used must have a VERY STIFF SPINE, rather than
the rather flexible spines found on a lot of modern hand-ratchet clamps.
There are stiff rubber pads between the clamp faces and the disc. The setup
looks flimsy, but I have done shake-tests over a mattress with no tendency
for either glass or Hydrostone to slip. Whereas I am limited to handling at
most a 50 lb disc by hand, the good hand grips offered by the clamp let me
manually handle up to about 90 lbs with equal ease. If nothing else, you
can use the clamp scheme to lift the disc up far enough to get some straps
underneath. You could also use two clamps at 90 degrees, provided the jaw
heights were different enough to allow a spine cross over.
