A couple months ago while I was figuring my first mirror, I asked a
similar question, and was attempting to develop a mathematical model
describing figuring (and also polishing) action. I believe I made a good
start at describing a contact model for COC strokes that clearly shows the
central part of the mirror is always in contact, while the outside zones
are only intermittently in contact. You can see a description of this

Note that further advancements on this model are pending approval from my
business and social manager (wife) on my next mirror project.
