Another name is oriented strand board (OSB). I don't object to the OSB,
as much as I object to the fiberboard bases on most commercial dobs. At
least OSB is an exterior grade product. As for lightening it, just cut
off a bunch of wood - there' more strength there than you need (even
with about 1/2 the wood cut away I can sit on my mount with no
detectable flexure, and I weigh about 160 pounds).
