"Normal" is a misnomer in and of itself. If we
were normal, we would not be building telescopes
in the first place. Ask yourself, how many other
people do you know who have built telescopes.
And of those who have, how many have built a
telescope that is actually like a non-ATM (the
overwhelming majority of the world) would
think of as normal. The non-ATM would likely
call the Hubble or Hale telescopes normal,
because that's what they see on the news and
in the daily papers. Anything you might conceive
of in your garage would be considered abnormal,
and quite possibly unproductive by comparison to
what is current norm.
If however, you want to see a picture of a simple
newtonian reflector, I can send you some pics of
my first 8" F8, which was made mostly with scrap
materials. There is nothing flashy about it, and
no engineering marvels to boast of. I suppose some
ATMs might call it "normal" since it is typical of a
first attempt.

Dominic
