As a partial answer to the question, I routinely watched Galilean moon
and shadow transits with my homemade 81 mm f/14 Fraunhofer refractor. I
used Chance Pilkington glass and spent at least 300 hours on the project
[1986-87]. It ultimately showed quite a good star test - with a slight
‘turned up edge’ in mirror-making terms.
