I could never get the procedure to work as described.  I pour the pitch
onto the tool, press the mirror on for a second, then I remove the
mirror and place the mat on the pitch (make sure tehat you really soap
the mat good).  Then I use the mirror to press the mat into the pitch. 
After the pitch cools enough I remove the mat and re-press.
