You might consider using a piece of embossed plastic or fabric over you
tool. This will also give a flash polish. I know Howard mentions this
and some of the alternatives to pitch. Silk is one that comes to mind,
paper is another. I thought I would try this with my next mirror. You
have to be careful about rips in the plastic or fiber. This can lead to
scratching also.
