I thought U of Arizona was making *enormous* mirrors using a
spin casting technique in which the entire oven is rotated
around a vertical axis. This produces a blank that requires
far less grinding to get to a finished surface. I think that
molten glass, unlike mercury, is far too viscous to get an
optically precise figure by spinning.
