Is it the case? I rather think the attention span is greater to start with. Also, the 
enquiring mind comes into play. How often have you seen someone take their first look 
through a telescope and get really excited... then about an hour later they are toatlly 
disinterested in the whole show.

Some people just don't have what it takes to build an instrument... others don't have 
what it takes to use one...and few have what it takes to put up with the cold, the 
obstacles to trip over in the dark, the ratbag who turns the car headlights on at the 
star party... need I go on.

I'd rather the view that WE are a special breed :-)
