Best info I know of on grinding large mirrors is Bob Kestner

Thin Telescope Mirrors Part 1, 2and 3.

As for a machine to handle a 42" mirror I think you will have to scale
up a smaller design. My machine is somewhat like the machine shown
in Sky and Tel Dec. 1975 only scaled up to handle a 24".
