One other caution I would add is to make sure that your tube of RTV 
is fresh.  Older RTV that's been sitting around loses its ability to 
cure properly.  You can imagine the problems that might arise...  I 
always buy a new tube, for $3.00 it isn't worth the risk of using old 
stuff.

Also, RTV adheres well to aluminium if you give it a wipe with 
alcohol first to remove any residual grease which is usually present. 
 Make sure the alcohol is evaporated completely before applying the 
RTV though.
