It's a gun sight designed for pellet guns or 22's. My sales person suggested that a 22 might have too much recoil for them, but I told him that if my telescope has that much recoil, I have bigger problems 8^)
They're much like a TeleRad. For more details, Mike Bagneski gave a good description.

You're most welcome, I love mine. It can't be beat (for the price)! They have very nice adjustments too, if the travel is sufficient.

I think the dot is way too bright already, and the view too dim. I'd like to un-coat mine. If you want to make one from scratch, a simple pin-hole & lens should be able to put an image at infinity and then you could reflect it off a simple, unsilvered flat (like a TeleRad). The parts would probably be easier to find than an appropriate meniscus. The dimming of the sky isn't too much of a problem if you keep both eyes open. Then you can cover the end of the sight with your thumb and it still works (the sky in one eye, the dot in the other). This is very unlike my camera which produces lousy pictures when I put my thumb over the lens ;-)
I'd still like to be able to tweak the oprics by adjusting the distance between the object and the mirror.
Hey, I noticed that my mirror isn't quite square with the tube. At first I thought this was just sloppy assembly, but now I wonder. It's tilted slightly downward and the LED is below the centerline of the tube. What's yours like?
If you come up with any great ideas for mod's, let me know.
TIA,
